According to an old legend, the name Norway comes from the Old Norse Norðrvegr, meaning the way to the north. The name referred to the long, jagged coastline, generally free of ice in winter. In autumn, the coast moves from one season to the next, the landscape turns to gold and the temperature drops slowly through the month of September.

The ferry crossing from Hirtshals (Denmark) to Bergen (Norway) takes 19 hours.
In cool, brisk air, September and October bring wetter, more uncertain weather; the rains can be very heavy in this season. Little by little, as winter approaches, the days grow shorter, night falls earlier and earlier in the afternoon, and temperatures drop.
The landscape takes on golden colours under a shifting sky, heavy or luminous, and the autumn storms begin to strike the coast, with violent winds and torrential rain.
