The exhibition proposed by Jean-Marie Mahieu testifies to the synthesis he makes between his attachment to Borining, his interest and his encounter with the cultures of the world. “To know where you are going, you have to understand where you live,” he says. Through slow metamorphosis, he explores places that are significant to his memory, places that still resonate with the many industrial and social events that took place there, places where the meaning “appears on the surface of the ground like coal veins”. This exhibition takes place in parallel to the one dedicated to Vincent van Gogh and Borining, a major event in Mons 2015. The two events, of course, have one main thing in common: in both cases, Borining determined the artistic future of these two men. *
For this exhibition, I designed a catalog in close collaboration with the visual artist Jean-Marie Mahieu and a whole series of communication media. Editorial work was thought of as a progression that accompanies the discovery of artistic subject and works, while leaving them the necessary space, both physically and emotionally. The visual pages dedicated to the works are framed with a balance of editorial elements, quotations or extracts that allow some setbacks and rhythms.
